Overview

Amber Fort, also known as Amer Fort, is a majestic fortification perched on a hilltop in Amer, a town near Jaipur in Rajasthan, India. Constructed by Raja Man Singh I in the 16th century, the fort was expanded and enhanced by subsequent rulers, showcasing its grandeur as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a prominent tourist destination in Jaipur.

Constructed from red sandstone and marble, Amber Fort is divided into four main sections, each with distinct features and purposes. The first section, Jaleb Chowk, served as a gathering space for public events and ceremonies. The second section, Diwan-i-Am, was the hall for public audiences. The third section, the Sheesh Mahal, is renowned for its intricate mirror work that creates a dazzling effect when illuminated. The final section comprises the private quarters of the royal family, including the exquisite Sukh Niwas and Jas Mandir.

Amber Fort stands out for its fusion of Hindu and Muslim architectural styles, featuring detailed carvings, paintings, sculptures, lattice work, and inlaid mirror designs. Visitors are treated to panoramic views of the surrounding hills and the serene Maota Lake, adding to the fort’s appeal.

Access to the fort can be gained either by an elephant ride or a walk up the hill. Inside, visitors can explore the various courtyards, palaces, and gardens while delving into the rich history of the fort and its royal inhabitants. The fort is also known for its evening sound and light show, which dramatically narrates the fort’s history.
